Alternate:

Auditions: During the audition process at the beginning of the season, the team director may choose to have alternates on the team.  The alternates will be chosen by the audition judges.  The judges should choose alternates by looking for dancers whose skill level is close to that of the team, and whom they believe demonstrated the potential that through hard work, to be a ‘full’ team member in the subsequent year.  Auditionees have the option to chose not be an alternate and therefore not participate with the dance team.  The alternate should use this year on the team to familiarize themselves with the team, their purpose, goals and commitments, to expand and improve their technique, skills, and their auditioning and performance capabilities.

Definition:  The alternate should use their season to improve dance team skills, technique and performance and auditioning criteria, by participating in practices, and selected performance opportunities (i.e. little dancers clinic, spring show), fundraising etc.

Language Reference:

Alternate- Alternate team member

Team Member- Non alternate team member

Note- alternates will take part in all practices, camps, choreography, need costumes and registrations fees just the same as a full team member and therefore fundraising requirements are the same.

Performance Opportunities:    In the event that a member is unable to perform due to other commitments, injury etc, the alternate may dance in the member’s position.  The alternate may be notified of this opportunity as little as minutes in advance and should be ready to perform at all performances.  The team and directors should assist the alternate in learning correction position and timing of the dance, but the alternate should know all the steps prior to this opportunity.

Challenge:

Overall Objective:       To give motivation to the alternate and team members to do their best, increase skill and performance capabilities for the overall betterment of the team.

If the alternate feels that they have increase their skill level enough to perform they may issue a challenge to a team member.  Challenges shall follow the following procedures:

School performances:

Approval: The alternate must request and have an approval of a challenge from the student and director members of the CLDT Standards Board.  The alternative must designate which team member is being challenged in the request.  The challenge cannot designate a team member whom at the time of challenge participated in the previous challenge.  To approve the challenge the board must feel that the alternate has been giving 100% in practice, has been contributing to the overall wellness of the team, and feel the challenge would be a productive use of the team’s time. The board may deny the request.

Timing:  The request must be approved and announced to the team so that:

a.       The alternate and member have a weekend to practice prior to the challenge.

b.      After the challenge date, there is one week’s worth of practices.

The Challenge:  The team member and alternate will perform the dance twice each- once with the team- the alternate performing the in team members positions and with the correct ‘timing’, and once by themselves.  This will take place during scheduled practice.

Judging/Scoring:         The challenges will be judged by the team captains and standards boards members, being overseen by the director(s).  The judges will use the audition score sheet as a guideline for judging.  The judges will only be considering the challenge (just like at auditions) and there will be no allowance for factors outside the challenge.  (i.e. performance during practice etc. attendance etc.- attendance rules etc are in place to regulate these behavioral problems).   This is to simulate the audition/performance process- where the judges have no background on the auditionee.  In order for the alternate to take over the team members position, she must out score/perform the team member; thus resulting in a better overall team.  A judge may excuse herself if she feels that she is unable to be objective.  All conversation during the judging process is to remain confidential.

This process will be performed on a dance by dance basis.

There will only be one challenge per alternate per performance.

Competition:

Approval: The alternate must request and have an approval of a challenge from the student and director members of the CLDT Standards Board.  The challenge cannot designate a team member whom at the time of challenge participated in the previous challenge.  To approve the challenge the board must feel that the alternate has been giving 100% in practice, has been contributing to the overall wellness of the team, and feel the challenge would be a productive use of the team’s time. The board may deny to request.

Timing:  The request must be approved and announced to the team so that:

c.       The alternate and member have a weekend to practice prior to the challenge.

d.      After the challenge date, there is three week’s worth of practices.

The Challenge:  The team member and alternate will perform competition dance twice each- once with the team- the alternate performing the in team members positions and with the correct ‘timing’, and once by themselves.  The challenge may be separately scheduled to accommodate judges or take place during practice.

Note: For state competition- per rules, the team must send the same team members to perform all dances.  Therefore for state competition, both dances will be judged.  Other competition rules will be reviewed as needed.  If allowed the alternate may challenge for one competition dance.

Judging/Scoring:         The challenges will be judged by the team captains and standards board’s members and the parent standards board members, being overseen by the director(s).  If there is a conflict of interest the director will provide an outside judge.
